Excessive growth of lateral buds strongly reduced the vigour of affected plants. Stem necrosis occurred directly beneath the developing flower buds, causing their death before flower opening. Clearly defined wavy yellow bands sometimes conforming to oak-leaf patterns were observed on young red leaves. Rose line pattern virus was associated with yellow banding of leaves of greenhouse-grown rose bushes. Similar results were reported with rose X disease on commercial roses in California and Oregon in 1977. RRP disease was designated a component of the rose mosaic complex. Symptoms in greenhouse-maintained plants remain constant and include severe stunting, deformity, rugosity and mottling on leaflets.

This thornless rootstock is a reliable indicator for RRP. A very strong symptomatic reaction occurred however on Rosa multiflora Burr. However, there was no necrotic reaction and gumming around the graft side after graft transmission on Prunus serrulata ‘Shirofugen’ (flowering cherry) used as an indicator plant for indexing rose mosaic. The disease named rose ring pattern (RRP) on hybrid tea roses exhibits symptoms which are very similar to mosaic virus: ring pattern, fine line pattern, chlorotic flecking on the leaves and colour-break rings in petals. The yellow variety of White's ‘ordinary rose mosaic’ was characterized as rose yellow mosaic caused by Rosa virus 2. The unknown causal agent, transmissible only by shoot or buds grafts, was designated as Rosa virus 1. White in 1928 as an infectious chlorosis of rose. They may suffer more severe winter dieback than plants free of rose mosaic. Infected roses can be dwarfed with bleached and damaged buds. Typical symptoms include yellow mosaic with very bright and yellow chlorotic areas, chlorotic patching, vein banding (yellow bands along the vein) and yellow-net ( Figure 3) symptoms, when the entire vein network may be affected. Occasionally chlorosis is confined to one side of the leaf and the unequal growth of leaf margins results in leaf distortion. The most characteristic symptoms are prominent chlorotic areas commonly adjacent to the midrib of the leaflet or leaf, greyish-yellow areas with green islands, mottles, chlorotic line patterns ( Figure 1) consisting of defined or partly defined rings ( Figure 2), erratic wavy lines (narrow or broad bands), watermarks (fine greyish lines in the leaf surface) and oak-leaf patterns. Although symptoms caused by many plant viruses can be specifically associated with the viral causal agent, mosaics, including rose mosaic, are complex and highly variable in symptom expression.
